The Well Youth Workcamps

The Vision

The purpose of The Well is to challenge youth to consider service as an essential part of living out authentic Christian faith. Brothers Redevelopment, Inc. (BRI) has been meeting the home maintenance and repair needs of low-income seniors and disabled persons for the past 37 years. BRI has always relied heavily on volunteers to provide the labor for these projects. In 1998, BRI received funds to renovate an old office into a 35 bed volunteer housing facility, which serves as the summer home for this joint venture.

Who Can Participate

The Well program is designed for participants from high school age and on up and is open to all denominations. BRI asks that one adult sponsor accompany every five youth who make up the group. BRI can accommodate groups of up to 35 total participants (youth and sponsors). Smaller groups may be paired with another smaller group, a practice that allows participants from different places and denominations to share the experience. To apply, see
The Well-Youth Workcamps Application.

Typical Well Week Schedule

Evening sessions include worship, presentations and group reflection. Thursday evening is our closing time of reflection, processing what we have seen, felt and learned during the course of the week. This is perhaps the most important time of the week. Issues raised are addressed light of our calling as Christians to love others and to respond to those in need.

One evening during the week is scheduled as “free time” so that each group can go out to dinner and explore the city. (Some work teams may not be finished till early evening.)

What Will You Do

In addition to learning about service, the staff will try to make sure that not all your time in the city is spent working or being involved in serious discussions. They will build into the schedule one free evening and free time each day. Recreation activities include: volleyball, soccer, Frisbee, shooting baskets, lifting weights and swimming at the neighborhood recreation centers, and exploring parts of the city on your own. We invite participants to bring other recreation and entertainment ideas with them.

What to Bring

While in Denver, groups stay at The Well volunteer housing. Each participant should bring a sleeping bag, a towel and toiletries. Work clothing is a must and other casual/sport clothing as desired. There are no laundry facilities. Participants should also bring Bibles and notebooks. A detailed list of what to bring will be included in the orientation materials sent to you should you decide to participate in this program.

Transportation

The Well program does not provide transportation. If you are thinking of coming by plane, train, school or touring buses, we will ask that you rent vans while in Denver to transport your group to service sites. For those arriving in school or touring buses, you may be required to park you bus somewhere else other than the host facilities due to limited parking space.

Health Insurance

Accidents can and do happen while at the service assignments, during recreational activities and free time, even on the trip to and from the city. Since The Well program does not carry medical insurance for participants, we ask that group leaders make sure that all group members have insurance and that the Medical Release Forms (sent with orientation materials) are completed and made available to our staff.
